This week, I participated in an interesting topic during Probing in Science class. Dr. Sadiah gave different pictures and assigned us to make an interview between teacher and student according to the picture given. Each group must have two interviewers, one interviewee, two script writers for the question and answer script. After finished the interview, we have to present it in front of the class and Dr. Sadiah gave her comments on our interview scripts.

The most important things in an interview are the question sequence and questioning skill. Sequence the question from the easier to the more difficult one. In this teacher-student situation, the interviews must nonjudgemental because there is no right or wrong answer in an interview. If there is misunderstand or misconception, the teacher supposes to give feedback like ‘yes, it is right but….’ to make sure the student comfortable with the interview. Do not blame the student and avoid ‘yes or no’ answer.

Another important aspect in an interview is waiting time. The teacher must wait for the student to answer. Sometimes the student needs more time to give the best answer and the teacher needs to be patience. If the student fails to respond, rephrase and restructured the question but do not give the answer. Do not ask many questions because it will take a time and make student nervous but only ask a few specific question and probe further. After student gave their answer, the teacher should ask ‘why do you say so?’ to make the student elaborate more on their understanding. Sometimes the student used the wrong word for the right concept.

Lastly, treat the students as a human being and they do not know all the answer. Make a comfortable and relax environment to get their best opinion and prediction about the question. There are pros and cons using the interview as an assessment. With an interview, we can share the understanding between each others but the con is interviews are quite time consuming.

In my opinion, there are two types of interview, the formal and informal one. We have to treat the interviewee according to their level and situation. But the basic of interview is same. I got a clear overview about the interview after this session and I will practices it in my class and for my master project.

This week I learnt about concept map. Each group must create a concept map on the Cell topic in Biology subject. After that, we compared each concept map and do some correction. We also have been introduced to the software to create mind mapping called freeMind. freeMind is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java. Its allow us to create mind mapping with many tools available. Here is my concept map using freeMind software, LOCOMOTION AND SUPPORT. In order to open it, you must first download the software from internet. No worries because it is free.

Another software that I have to learn this week is Camtasia. Camtasia Studio is a screen video capture program. We can carry out any demonstration in the computer by recording it using this software. Camtasia allows audio recording while screen-capturing is in progress, so we can narrate the demonstration as it is carried out. After the presentation has been captured, we able to edit it by cutting or pasting different parts as needed.

This software is new for me. I have a little difficulties to conduct it. I have to study the tutorials in order to understand how it works. After completing the video, I need to convert the file format from camproj. to mp4 by using the production wizard in order to upload it to youtube. I was given an introduction to the one of the software that I have to attach in my e-portfolio named Picasa. Picasa is a software application for organizing and editing digital photos. One of the Picasa application is Picasa Web Albums which is a photo sharing web site from Google. It allows users with accounts at Google to store and share photos for free. In Picasa, I can edit my picture such as repair red eye flaws, straighten the picture and put a text into my photo. My lecturer assigned me to do photo collage and movie presentation. After finished the collage and movie, I have to upload them to my web album in order to share it with everyone. I represented USIM as a participant in National Research and Innovation Competition, or NRIC in short, at USM, Penang on 20th-22nd May 2008. It was organized by the Student Representative Council of Universiti Sains Malaysia. This event provides a platform for the best final year projects from local and private universities to compete under a single banner besides being exhibited to the public. “Innovation Towards Sustainable Transformation” has been selected as 2008 theme. I am the silver medal winner in fundamental science category and below is the video around the competition.

The best way for me to describe my teaching philosophy is by saying that I love teaching. My first goal is to build a relationship with my student. The simple step is by remembering each name and a little bit about their life. I don’t mind if my student want to talk something unrelated with education and I’ll give my best to make they realize that I’m not only as a teacher but also as a friend. I believe with that, the teaching and learning process will become easier.

The most important aspect is to have fun and feel comfortable in class. It can attract my students to come to school and enjoy the material of my courses. There will be a lot of interactive learning involving face to face lectures, group discussion/tutorial, class presentations, video presentations, practical laboratory work and problem solving approach. This student centered activity will create an effective and conducive learning environment.

Career preparation is another aspect that I feel all the student in the world must learn from the school. I want them to build self-confident and communication skills by always participate in the learning process throughout the class. It will be a great preparation for life after school, whether the student further their study or directly into the work force.

Good lectures are fun and enjoyable. I will try to break lectures into short time because student only can focus at the first hour of lectures. During the break time, I want them to stretch their body and take a rest before continue with my lectures. I’ll suggest them to drink a lot of water so they will have more oxygen to digest the knowledge.

In a nutshell, I believe that to become a better educator, we have to treat teaching as a hobby that we always do even though not in the school. Passion is the keyword to be success as a great teacher. I hope someday I can be G.T.N (great teacher Najihah).

I participated in an interesting educational activity this week, with a lot of supports from technology. I was introduced to smartboard which is used by Smart School in Malaysia to improve the teaching and learning skill. The smartboard is an interactive whiteboard which provide touch control of computer applications and annotation over standard Microsoft Windows applications. It has digital pens to replace the traditional whiteboard marker. Its function just like a computer and it is the best way to educate student through the ICT. What I learned from this experiences is how to use and apply it in student centered activity and how it can attract student towards the courses.

I can't deny that smartboard have many benefits but in my opinion, the smartboard also become difficulties to the teachers and students. They have to spend a lot of time to study and discover how to use it in class. But it can be resolve if they get suitable training. This is how the vision of 2020 in Malaysian education system can be achieved.

In the coming year, as a professional biology educator, I plan to be a smart and out-going educator in shaping the future of the country. I am dedicated to improving myself and learning more about biology in education. I will do my best to enhance teaching and learning process by applying student centered activities in the classroom, so that all students can involve directly to my courses.

Based upon strategic planning efforts to ensure safe atmosphere in the classroom where all student feel valued, where students seek out teachers for guidance and support with their learning needs, and where all students are known by at least one teacher in the school, I want to work toward creating a conducive learning environment by implementing comfortable moment in the class.

I believe teaching process comes from the heart and teachers have to be patience as possible to educate students. I plan to train my soul by attending motivation, so that I will be able to control my temper and I will not doing anything that I will regret later on.

I am in the process attending my postgraduate study and I will further my study until the highest level. After completing my study, I can improve my teaching skills and feel more confident to educate my students. I hope I’ll be able to achieve my goals in educational field.

Blogging is not new for me. I am a blogger since 2009 and I already have a blog for my INFORMAL WRITING. I hope you are interested in visiting my blog.

In this ICT class, I was asked to create one blog and turn it into e-portfolio. The differences between blog and e-portfolio are:
1) e-portfolio is for educational purpose
2) e-portfolio is a formal blog
3) e-portfolio as storage (collection of artifacts)
4) e-portfolio as workspace (collection plus reflection/metacognition)
5) e-portfolio is a learning record

I admit this is the first time I heard about Smart School in Malaysian education system. My lecturer gave me two documents about Smart School, the blueprint and roadmap. After I studied the documents, I knew that Malaysia intends to transform its educational system to fulfill Vision 2020. The Smart Schools initiative is one of the seven flagship applications that are part of Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project. The catalyst for this massive transformation will be technology supported Smart Schools. Below are the two documents that we have to read to gain more understanding about the smart school:

Hi, I’m Najihah Ismail, but please call me Miss Jiha (spelling with ‘gha’) -everyone will. I’m graduated from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in Bachelor of Science with Honor (Food Biotechnology) 2008. Now I pursuing my study in Master Education (Biology) at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris as a fulltime student after work for a while at Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad.

I grew up in Temerloh, one of the small cities in Pahang state. Currently I live in Taman Universiti beside UPSI. My family consists of 4 children and I was the youngest. My parent were retired teacher and now they just relaxing and enjoy playing with their two grand daughters. I’m 25 years old and not married yet, that’s why everyone addresses me as Miss not Mrs.

My main interest is working in microbiology laboratory because I think it’s much challenging to work with something tiny and can’t see with naked eyes. But after I have an experience working at bank, I’m also interested in cooperating with human being. The most things I do in my life is listening any kinds of music from pop ye ye, disco pop, classic rock, RnB, Indie and so on as long as its lyrics make sense over my ear.

I was inspired by my parent and my sister to be an educator. Even though I don’t have any education background, I really passionate in teaching and sharing knowledge. I realize that I have to put more effort to master about education and in the meant time I have a mission to complete my studies here only in a short time period. Hope everyone will pray for me and here is my CV for review.
